Musée George Sand et la Vallée Noire
La Châtre

(JPG) “A forbidding square tower blackened by the centuries and rooted in solid rock...” (Mauprat). Former feudal castle of the Chauvigny family, built in the fifteenth century, this three-storeyed square keep is now the home of the ‘George Sand and the Black Valley’ Museum. After being used as a prison for two centuries, it was turned into a museum in 1937.
-  permanent exhibition on George Sand (manuscripts, photographs, letters, first editions) showing the work and political commitment of this writer.
-  exhibition of traditional local artefacts : headdresses, pottery, paintings by artists of the Crozant-Gargilesse school (Osterlind, Maillaud, Madeline ...).
-  Collection of some three thousand stuffed birds from around the world.


Open to the public. Guided tours on request.
Opening times : February to December 31st - Closed in January.
